V teoretičnem delu diplomsko delo predstavi temeljne pojme s področja samomora, družbene odzive, pogoste vzroke in statistične trende v Sloveniji ter širše. Preventivne vsebine in konkretna ozaveščanja so prisotni le redko.

Title:Journalistic Ethisc in Media Coverage of Suicides in 2021
Abstract:The thesis examines how Slovenian media report on suicides and whether they comply with ethical guidelines established by national and international journalistic organizations. Reporting on suicide is highly sensitive, as the choice of language, the level of detail disclosed, and the handling of personal information can negatively affect vulnerable individuals. Depending on their approach, the media can either contribute to the destigmatization of mental health issues and promote prevention or reinforce harmful narratives and increase the risk of copycat behaviour. The theoretical part outlines key concepts related to suicide, societal responses, risk factors, and current statistical trends in Slovenia and worldwide. It also introduces the Papageno and Werther effects, highlighting the contrasting influence of media coverage. Ethical recommendations issued by the World Health Organization, the National Institute of Public Health, and various journalistic codes of conduct are discussed. The empirical part consists of a qualitative content analysis of six articles on suicide published in 2021 and 2022 on the websites of 24ur.com, RTV SLO, and NIJZ. The analysis focused on six coding categories: protection of identity, avoidance of sensationalism, inclusion of help resources, mention of causes, expression of concern, and presence of preventive messages. Findings suggest that while the media generally adhere to basic ethical standards, they often fail to include supportive resources or preventive guidance, thereby limiting their contribution to suicide prevention. Only a few articles provide concrete support or raise awareness effectively. The conclusion underscores the need for more responsible reporting and emphasizes the crucial role of the media in promoting mental health and supporting public well-being.
