Title:Testing Preschool Children's Ability to Discriminate Between Pitches Using a Digital Testing Tool
Abstract:The aim of the thesis is to test the ability to discriminate between pitches using a digital testing tool in preschool children aged four to six. Our goal was to examine the children's performance on a pitch discrimination test and to determine whether age, gender, additional musical participation, and parents' engagement in musical activities significantly impact their ability to discriminate between pitches. The data were collected using a quantitative method; the children took a specially designed digital test on a tablet, and the parents completed a questionnaire. For the data analysis, the Kruskal–Wallis test and the Mann –Whitney test were used. The results showed that the largest proportion of children successfully discriminated between pitches in all examples. Moreover, discrimination between two same pitches posed fewer problems than discrimination between two different pitches. Group differences in age, gender, and additional musical participation were not statistically significant. However, statistically significant differences were observed between children whose parents engage in musical activities and those whose parents do not.
