Abstract:Vsestranski slovenski umetnik France Mihelič (1907–1998) je zapustil bogat in raznolik opus del v najrazličnejših likovnih tehnikah. Največjo grafično in risarsko zbirko Miheličevih del hranijo v Grafičnem kabinetu Franceta Miheliča, ki deluje pod okriljem Pokrajinskega muzeja Ptuj - Ormož. Pričujoče delo skuša zapolniti ta manko v razumevanju umetnikovega opusa in sprememb v njem.

Title:The disappearance of landscape in the drawings and graphics of France Mihelič
Abstract:The versatile Slovenian artist France Mihelič (1907– 1988) left a rich and varied opus of works in a wide range of artistic techniques. The largest collection of Mihelič’s graphic and drawing works is stored in the Graphic Cabinet of France Mihelič, which operates under the auspices of the Ptuj – Ormož Regional Museum. The collection of more than six thousand drawings and graphics was enriched by a further 189 works from the artist’s early period, donated by the Musek family in 2024. Through a systematic review of Mihelič’s legacy, we found that the artist’s depiction of landscape in his drawings and graphics changed significantly over the years, from realistic to fantastic, while in his later works the landscape completely disappeared. Art historians have so far focused on the artist’s figuration, while the motif of the disappearance of landscape has often been overlooked in reviews of Mihelič’s opus. This work seeks to fill this gap in the understanding of the artist’s opus and the changes in it. The depiction and gradual disappearance of the landscape is set in the context of the artist’s studies at the Zagreb Academy, the influence of his professors, older people, other artists, and Mihelič’s encounter with carnival customs. In particular, the most important turning points that influenced the artist’s work are highlighted, namely the direct experience of the horrors of the Second World War and his study visit to Paris, after which the artist’s work was marked by fantasy. The master’s thesis presents the artist’s transition from the real world to the world of the imagination through a chronological review and methods of analysis and interpretation. In particular, the depiction of landscape, which is becoming less and less important in terms of content, is shown, as Mihelič no longer needs it to depict motifs and narrate. The master’s thesis also presents for the first time some of the drawings and graphics that were acquired by the Graphic Cabinet of France Mihelič in Ptuj, through a donation from the Musek family. Selected drawings and graphics, which form the basis for the explanation, analysis, and interpretation of the content, are presented in the catalogue part.
