Title:Introducing emotions to visually impaired children and adolescents by using the Wheel of emotions game
Abstract:The following master's thesis entitled Introducing Emotions to Visually Impaired Children and Adolescents by Using the Wheel of Emotions Game consists of a theoretical and a practical part. The theoretical part defines blindness and impaired vision, describes how children and adolescents live with visual impairment, and explores emotions and emotional intelligence in the blind and visually impaired, as well as their perception of emotions in everyday life. As part of this, we described how emotions have been previously presented to the blind and visually impaired. We found it important to describe how blind and visually impaired children play, where the recently adapted Wheel of Emotions game was particularly highlighted as an example of emotional learning. For the practical part, we created an innovative, didactic-conversation game of Wheel of Emotions with tactile facial expressions and adapted emotion cards, which use questions and tasks to promote the emotional literacy and intelligence of visually impaired children. The game also includes QR codes for audio recordings of emotions and emotion cards, which add a sound dimension to the game and make it more entertaining. The purpose of the master's thesis was to expand and enrich the range of adapted games for the blind and visually impaired, which are often priced beyond reach. The developed and adapted Wheel of Emotions game enables exploration, recognition, understanding and expression of emotions, it strengthens emotional literacy and, by combining tactile, conversational and audio elements, creates a safe and playful environment for learning about the six basic emotions (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, disgust) with the added emotion of love. We evaluated the Wheel of Emotions game with blind children from the IRIS Centre and children with full sensory abilities. We established that the game is suitably adapted, accessible and appealing to both groups of children, and is an effective multisensory playful learning tool for promoting the development of emotional literacy.
