Title:Bullying among university students: an analysis of demographic, psychological and academic factors
Abstract:Bullying is a relevant issue even in higher education, although the characteristics of this phenomenon among university students are less researched. The aim of our master's thesis was to determine the characteristics of bullying among students in terms of types of bullying, gender and age. We also wanted to examine academic achievement, general self-esteem and social anxiety as predictors of victimization and bullying behavior among students. Our study included 177 Slovenian students, 74% of whom were female, with an average age of 22,74 years (SD = 1,85). To collect data on bullying behavior and victimisation, we used the Slovenian adaption of the Peer Relations Questionnaire: Aggressive Behavior/Victimization (APRI-BT), which we partially adjusted for our target population. In addition, we also used the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale, the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and two measures of academic achievement: an objective measure (the average grade of the previous semester - winter semester 2024/25) and a subjective measure (the item “I am more academically successful than my classmates,” which is part of the Subjective Academic Achievement Scale). We also collected demographic and study-related data. We found out that relational bullying is the most common form of bullying among Slovenian students, followed by verbal and physical bullying. Younger students were more often in the role of bullying victims, while no differences in bullying perpetration were found based on age. The results showed that men are more likely to be bullying perpetrators than women, while our study did not show any gender differences in victimization. Academic performance did not prove to be a significant predictor of either bullying perpetration or victimization. However, we conclude that general self-esteem and social anxiety are important predictors of bullying among students. Students with lower general self-esteem report higher victimization, though this factor is not a significant predictor of bullying perpetration among students. High social anxiety is a significant predictor of victimization, and at the same time, students with high anxiety are less likely to bully others. In the interpretation, we explained the above results, their practical implications, limitations of the study and ideas for future research.
