Title:Effectiveness and perception of two-factor authentication among users: an analysis of security culture and user experience : diplomsko delo univerzitetnega študijskega programa Varstvoslovje
Abstract:The effectiveness and perception of two-factor authentication (2FA) were examined among users from the perspective of their security culture, digital literacy, and user experience. The purpose of the thesis was to determine the prevalence of 2FA usage, the user experience with this protection, and the connections between 2FA use, security awareness, and users’ digital literacy. Data were collected through an anonymous online survey conducted among 112 participants. The results showed that 2FA is relatively widespread among respondents and generally well accepted, as users reported feeling safer when using it. The user experience with 2FA was, on average, assessed as simple and reliable, especially among digitally literate individuals. The main barrier to broader adoption was identified as a lack of knowledge and understanding, which indicates the need for further awareness-raising and education, particularly among less digitally literate users. It was also confirmed that security culture significantly influences the use of 2FA; users with higher security awareness adopt it more frequently. Personal experience with a cyber incident did not have a statistically significant impact on 2FA usage in this study. The research confirms 2FA as an effective and necessary security mechanism and highlights the gap between awareness and actual behavior in the field of cybersecurity.
