Title:Shifting systems, moving people: the role of political-economic regimes in migration logics : magistrsko delo
Abstract:This thesis examines the relationship between political-economic regimes and migration, with an emphasis on socialism in the former Yugoslavia and post-industrial capitalism in Europe and Slovenia. It analyses how socialist ideology, with its principles of equality, full employment and work as a value, shaped migration within Yugoslavia and towards the more economically developed Western Europe. Capitalism, more specifically late neoliberal capitalism, which is characterized by labor market precariousness, free market ideology, and the apparent freedom of individual choice, is taken as a contrast to socialism. Using the example of Slovenia, the thesis analyzes the transition of the political system and the resulting transformation of migration flows and their management. The thesis also mentions the case of the »erased« as an example of contradictory exclusion in the post-socialist period. Special emphasis is placed on the labor market, the categorization of migrants, and the contradictions between the systems. The thesis highlights migration as a social phenomenon and emphasizes that it is not only that, but also an important historical and political phenomenon that is deeply embedded in the system. A comparison between the two systems shows how regimes enable and restrict labor mobility and shape migrants as important actors in the formation of class and workers. The Marxist perspective allows for an understanding of migration that is conditioned by the logic of capitalist accumulation. This paper contributes to the understanding of migration that transcends individual decisions and is linked to global processes and historical contexts.
