Title:The representation of women in Elden Ring
Abstract:Gender is a key factor in human life, shaping an individual's development through socialization. It also plays an important role in video games, which create a space for the spread of gender stereotyping. The master's thesis examines the representation of female characters in the game Elden Ring. The sample included 120 characters, which were analysed through content analysis, with particular attention later focused on 14 female characters. We were interested in how gender is represented in the game, the representation and nature of female characters, and how they differ from male characters in terms of number, narrative importance, and behavioural characteristics. Through qualitative analysis, we also examined which personality and behavioural attributes female characters express, and to what extent they reproduce or subvert traditional gender stereotypes and roles. The analysis showed that gender in Elden Ring is mostly presented implicitly and does not directly influence the gameplay experience. Male characters are numerically dominant and often non-human, while female characters are mostly human and physically attractive, with their representation being ambivalent, as it combines influence with an idealized or tragic image. Despite their smaller representation, women are often placed in influential positions with important narrative roles. They are depicted as multidimensional, showing empathy, determination and confident communication, while rarely displaying aggression. Their power is expressed through leadership, speech, and protectiveness, and they are notably not sexualized. Thus, Elden Ring partly reproduces traditional gender patterns but simultaneously subverts stereotypes and offers a complex and contemporary depiction of female characters.
