Title:Adherence to standard ISO/IEC 27037:2012 in vehicle digital forensics
Abstract:In the master’s thesis the application of the ISO/IEC 27037:2012 standard was examined in the context of digital forensics of electronic systems in road vehicles. The research analyzed how frequently and in what context this standard appears in scientific and professional literature dealing with vehicle digital forensics. The thesis was structured in two parts - theoretical and empirical - with the empirical section conducted through a systematic literature review based on the PRISMA methodology and a thematic analysis following Braun and Clarke (2006). In the theoretical part, the architecture of modern vehicle electronic systems was presented, the sources and types of data were defined, and the evidential value of such data in forensic contexts was explained. Special emphasis was placed on the principles of the ISO/IEC 27037:2012 standard, which provides guidelines for the identification, collection, acquisition, and preservation of digital evidence. This standard establishes key principles such as integrity, traceability, audit trails, and the chain of custody, all of which ensure the legal admissibility of digital evidence. It was found that the ISO/IEC 27037:2012 standard does appear in the literature on vehicle digital forensics, though less frequently than specialized technical guidelines focusing on the specific processes of the automotive industry. Nevertheless, the standard was recognized as a universal conceptual framework that can be effectively applied in the context of vehicle electronic systems. It was emphasized that consistent implementation of the standard could enhance procedural uniformity, reduce risks related to the loss of evidential value, and improve the reliability of forensic investigation results in modern road vehicles’ electronic systems.
