Abstract:
In this chapter, we present a cable news-based index of economic stress that can be used to measure and monitor economic stress. Data shows that economic stress was highest during the COVID-19 pandemic, which is consistent with the literature. Using a vector autoregressive model, we found that a shock to economic stress negatively affects economic activity, which is valuable information for policymakers.
