Title:The role of power in mobbing at work
Abstract:Power is a word that relates to our daily lives in many ways, which means there are many different definitions and meanings of power. In the Dictionary of Standard Slovenian Language, power is described as a force that enables a person to exercise their will and, in this way, influence the behaviour of others. Power and mobbing are terms that are interrelated. In an organization, a person in power may influence employees by abusing their power, executing mobbing in an organisation. This masters thesis consists of a theoretical part and a research part. The theoretical part describes mobbing and power in organizations, as well as its characteristics. The research part focuses on the two types of mobbing that people in leading positions may use. Due to the formal position that they have, some leaders and bosses who have never developed good communication skills, who do not know how to control their internal conflicts, and who do not know how to lead themselves, may display a mob-like behaviour such as bullying and bossing. The results of mobbing in the workplace, acquired by using a questionnaire, will be presented. As the sample includes a small random part of population the results cannot be generalized. In the research part, we will present the results on the influence of power on the implementation of bossing in organizations, which were obtained with a survey questionnaire. We distributed 60 questionnaires in random organizations. Almost anyone can use their power but what they truly need is leadership skills.
