Title:Burnout at the workplace, the example of the police station Novo mesto
Abstract:Workplace burnout is a complex psychological syndrome that develops as a result of prolonged exposure to stress, emotional strain, and an imbalance between job demands and individual capabilities. The theoretical part explores the concept of burnout through key models, including Maslach’s three-dimensional model and Andreja Pšeničny’s reciprocal model. It provides a detailed overview of the symptoms, stages, causes, and consequences of burnout. Organizational, psychosocial, and individual risk factors are analyzed, along with the importance of organizational culture and leadership support in preventing burnout. The structure and operations of the Novo mesto Police Station are presented, as well as the key challenges faced by employees in their daily work. In the empirical part, a quantitative research method was employed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory – General Survey (MBI-GS) and the PSI questionnaire on physical symptoms to examine the occurrence of burnout among employees at the Novo mesto Police Station. The study included 55 participants, and the results showed that burnout most frequently occurs among employees aged 35 to 45, those in leadership positions, and individuals exposed to prolonged and uneven workloads. The findings confirm that emotional exhaustion, lack of support, and work overload are the main triggers of burnout, which also manifests in physical symptoms.
