Title:Deviation from the formal thematic structure of the Frederic Chopin's set of preludes
Abstract:This master's thesis explores the development of the prelude as a musical form, with a particular focus on Frédéric Chopin's collection of 24 Preludes, Op. 28, one of the most significant figures of musical Romanticism. Originally conceived as a short, improvisatory piece serving as an introduction to larger vocal or instrumental compositions, the prelude in Chopin's hands evolved into an independent musical miniature capable of expressing a wide range of moods, emotions, and characters. Chopin's preludes differ in length, tempo, and key, yet they are bound together within a coherent cycle that demonstrates the composer’s mastery in combining harmonic innovation, melodic lyricism, and emotional depth. The theoretical part of the thesis presents Chopin's life and creative development, alongside a historical overview of the prelude from the Renaissance and Baroque eras to Romanticism. The analytical section focuses on six selected preludes from Op. 28 (Nos. 2, 4, 6, 8, 20, and 24), examining their formal structure, harmonic features, melodic characteristics, and pianistic texture. Through this analysis, the study reveals Chopin’s synthesis of tradition and innovation. The aim of the thesis is to demonstrate how Chopin transcends the formal thematic structure to create a cycle of autonomous pieces that maintain both expressive unity and inner coherence. In doing so, he redefined the prelude as an independent concert form and made a lasting contribution to the enrichment of piano literature.
