Title:The Effect of Experimenter Presence on Task Performance of Varying Difficulty: The Role of Test Anxiety
Abstract:Social presence in experimental conditions, according to previous research, has different effects on the individual. In the master's thesis we examined the role of the presence of the experimenter, the difficulty of calculation tasks, and individual differences in test anxiety and perceived stress on the characteristics of task solving (performance, solving speed, and performance coefficient). The study, in which each participant solved easier and more difficult tasks under conditions of active and passive presence, included 48 students. The results showed that presence did not have a statistically significant effect on performance. In addition, it did not appear that active presence would further worsen performance on more difficult tasks or that it would increase the difference in performance between easier and more difficult tasks. Nevertheless, active presence was associated with higher subjective stress. The interpretation of presence was statistically significantly related only to the most difficult condition of the difficult task in active presence, where a more threatening interpretation coincided with a lower performance coefficient. Stress before the experiment was not related to performance, but test anxiety was positively related to stress before the experiment and to stress in active presence. The findings of the study indicate that social presence is related to the experience of stress, however this was not reflected in performance.
