Abstract:V teoretičnem delu govorimo o samopodobi, njenih področjih in krepitvi, družbenih omrežjih, učinkih družbenih omrežij, aktualnih družbenih omrežjih (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, BeReal), o varni rabi družbenih omrežij in vlogi staršev ter povezanosti med družbenimi omrežji in samopodobo.

Title:Connection between Social Media and Self-Esteem of Sixth- to Ninth-Grade Pupils
Abstract:In the theoretical part of this paper, we discuss self-esteem, associated dimensions and how to build it, social media, effects of social media, currently used social media (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, TikTok, BeReal), safe social media use and the role of parents in it as well as the connection between social media and one's self-esteem. In the empirical part of this paper, we present a study covering 232 sixth- to ninth-grade pupils of the Podravje primary schools. We explored the use of social media, which of them prevail, how much time the pupils spend on social media and screens in general and whether they are familiar with recommendations on social media use. We also studied self-esteem, particularly focusing on self-esteem in general, physical appearance, emotional stability/safety, verbal expression and honesty/reliability as well as the connection between these and social media, the connection between social media and one's well-being and whether the pupils have a role model and why exactly that person is their role model. It is important to highlight that most respondents are not familiar with the recommended age-appropriate screen use and do not follow all the recommendations on safe social media use.
