Slovenski in hrvaški politični voditelji so atentat postavili v kontekst širših narodnostnih problemov v monarhiji. Znotraj slovenske in hrvaške politike so obstajali različni pristopi, zlasti do narodnostnih vprašanj monarhije.

Title:The July Crisis through the Lens of the Slovene and Croatian Public Sphere
Abstract:The July Crisis was a harbinger of major changes in European and global politics. It arose as a result of the extremely unstable political conditions of the long 19th century, which were largely rooted in struggles for spheres influence among the great powers. The immediate trigger for the July Crisis was the Sarajevo assassination on June 28, 1914, in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie of Hohenberg, were killed by Gavrilo Princip, a radical nationalist student. The assassination shocked the entire monarchy, as well as the world. Nations within the monarchy expressed shock and disappointment in various ways, the most notorious being the anti-Serb demonstrations that erupted immediately after the assassination. During these demonstrations, the prevailing belief was that the assassination had been a state-sponsored project of the Kingdom of Serbia. The leaders of the Habsburg monarchy saw the assassination as a pretext for a preventive war against Serbia – a concept that had existed long before the assassination. Among the few who opposed the war was the Hungarian Prime Minister, Count István Tisza, who feared that such war would further destabilize the Slavic parts of the monarchy. Slovenian and Croatian political leaders placed the assassination in the broader context of national issues within the monarchy. Within Slovenian and Croatian politics, there were different approaches, especially regarding national questions. Ivan Šusteršič, the leader and driving force of the Slovenian People’s Party, called for a decisive confrontation with Greater Serbian hegemony, though the language of his appeal was ambiguous enough that he could easily be portrayed as a warmonger. In Croatia, the Frankist fraction of the Party of Rights led the anti-Serb demonstrations in Zagreb, which led to its leadership being excluded from the Croatian Parliament due to accusations against Serbian politicians within the ruling Croat-Serb Coalition. Despite the seriousness of the situation, there was hope throughout the July Crisis among the Slovenian and Croatian public sphere that the crisis would be resolved quickly – unaware that the world was irreversibly rushing toward what would then become the greatest conflict up to that time.
