Title:Defense mechanisms and syndromes in victims of domestic violence
Abstract:Defense mechanisms and psychological syndromes are psychological responses that develop in individuals who have been exposed to severe traumatic experiences. They represent adaptive survival mechanisms that enable victims to cope with prolonged feelings of threat. These responses do not reflect an individual’s weakness but rather constitute a natural psychological adaptation to life-threatening circumstances. Domestic violence is a multifaceted problem with social, psychological, legal, and legislative dimensions. Within the family circle, family members are usually strongly interconnected and their relationships deeply intertwined, which makes interrupting violence and the cycle of abuse even more difficult. Domestic violence represents a serious form of trauma that has long-term consequences for victims, both on a psychological and physical level. Due to the development of defense mechanisms or psychological syndromes, victims of domestic violence therefore urgently need external assistance and support, as they are neither able nor capable of breaking violent patterns on their own. In the master’s thesis, we defined in more detail the most common defense mechanisms as well as longer-term processes referred to as psychological syndromes that may develop in victims of domestic violence, especially those who have been exposed to such experiences for an extended period of time. Special emphasis was placed on the empirical part of the research, which is based on interviews conducted with police officers working in the field, who encounter cases of domestic violence on a daily basis in the course of their work. In the analysis of the responses, we found that police officers often recognize defense mechanisms in victims through behavioral and communication signs (denial and minimization of violence, justification of the perpetrator, and self-blame), while they recognize psychological patterns primarily intuitively and based on their own experiences. It was found that their level of knowledge varies, as some interviewees are unable to precisely name or distinguish the syndromes, but nevertheless describe behaviors associated with Stockholm syndrome, battered wife syndrome, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
