Title:Differentiating melodic samples with preschool children of the secondary age sector
Abstract:The diploma work titled Differentiating melodic patterns in preschool children of the second age group consists of two parts. The first part combines theoretical foundations, and the second presents the empirical research. In the theoretical part, we present musical abilities, describe them in greater detail and focus on their development, as well as touch upon the perception of melodic patterns in preschool children. We also present testing of musical abilities and describe three instruments for measuring these skills. Further on, we present a listening test that we used in a population of preschool children of the second age group. As the testing was carried out using a tablet computer, we briefly discuss the impact of technology on children and its use in kindergartens. In the empirical part of the diploma work, we first present the research sample. We then show how successfully children of the second age group differentiate melodic patterns. To compare differences between genders and age groups, we used the Mann–Whitney test, which is used to compare two independent samples. Based on the results, we found that children of the second age group achieved good results on average in differentiating melodic patterns, as the majority correctly solved more than half of the examples. The Mann–Whitney test did not show statistically significant differences between groups.
