Abstract:Magistrska naloga obravnava vpliv družbenega omrežja TikTok na kognitivne procese mladostnikov, s posebnim poudarkom na razponu pozornosti in možnostih uporabe platforme v izobraževalne namene.

Title:Impact of TikTok on learning subjects in high schools
Abstract:This master's thesis explores the impact of the social media platform TikTok on the cognitive processes of adolescents, with a specific focus on attention span and the potential of utilizing the platform for educational purposes. In the theoretical part, the development and characteristics of the YouTube and TikTok platforms are defined, followed by an analysis of the specific traits of Generation Z, who grew up in a hypernetworked world. Special attention is given to the psychological aspects of social media use, where neurological mechanisms, such as the dopamine reward loop, are used to explain the decline in the average attention span. Furthermore, the thesis investigates the concepts of "Edutainment" and "EduTok" as modern pedagogical approaches that seek to leverage the media logic of short-form videos to achieve educational goals. The study analyzes how micro-learning can serve as a bridge between informal and formal education, assuming that the content is adapted to the shorter attention span of modern learners. In the empirical part, a survey questionnaire was used to research the habits of young people regarding TikTok use and their attitude toward online educational content. The study, conducted on a sample of 582 students, confirmed with high statistical significance (p < 0.001) the existence of a paradox where the majority of students (81%) recognize the negative impact of TikTok on their own concentration, while simultaneously 85% of them perceive the platform as an effective tool for micro-learning and academic assistance. The master's thesis concludes by reflecting on the necessity of digital literacy and the adaptation of teaching methods to account for the altered cognitive patterns of Generation Z.
