Metode: Izvedli smo pregled literature v podatkovnih bazah MEDLINE, CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost) in Web of Science ter dodatno v Google Scholar. Potek iskanja smo prikazali s PRISMA diagramom. Moč dokazov smo ocenili z uporabo hierarhije dokazov Johns Hopkins. Ključni dejavniki uspešne obravnave so motivacija pacienta, kontinuirana podpora ter usposobljenost medicinskih sester, medtem ko omejitve predstavljajo predvsem čas, znanje in sistemska podpora. Ugotovitve poudarjajo potrebo po dodatnem izobraževanju in krepitvi kompetenc medicinskih sester.

Title:Nurse-Led interventions to support smoking cessation
Abstract:Introduction: Nurses play an important role in smoking cessation, but the interventions they implement are not clearly defined in the literature in terms of type, approach, method of delivery, and their advantages and limitations. The purpose of this thesis was to investigate and compare nursing interventions for smoking cessation. Methods: We conducted a literature review in MEDLINE, CINAHL Ultimate (EBSCOhost), Web of Science, and Google Scholar. We illustrated the search process using a PRISMA diagram. We assessed the strength of evidence using the Johns Hopkins hierarchy of evidence. We presented our findings in an evaluation table and conducted a content analysis. We included original studies (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods studies) and various types of literature reviews thematically related to nursing interventions for smoking cessation, published by 2026 in English or Slovenian. Results: A total of 35 studies were included in the final analysis. We found that the interventions were diverse and primarily included counseling, motivational interviewing, and the 5A approach. The role of patient motivation was emphasized, with longer-term and structured interventions more frequently associated with better outcomes. Discussion and Conclusion: Nurses’ interventions to help patients quit smoking are diverse. Key factors for successful treatment include patient motivation, ongoing support, and nurses’ competence, while the main limitations are time, knowledge, and systemic support. The findings highlight the need for additional education and the strengthening of nurses’ competencies.
