Title:Slovenian names for Leucanthemum vulgare (Oxeye daisy) intertwined with names for Bellis perennis (common daisy) at the intersection of disciplines and a cross-linguistic approach
Abstract:This article examines Slovenian folk names for Leucanthemum vulgare (oxeye daisy) from the perspective of their motivational patterns, word-formation, and etymological framework, highlighting their pronounced overlap with names for Bellis perennis (common daisy). The study is based on selected Slovenian material from older and contemporary lexicographic sources, combining lexicological, etymological, ethnobotanical, and ethnolinguistic approaches. Special attention is given to names derived from the plant’s appearance, flowering time, scent, habitat, and cultural or religious traditions. A comparative view of German and Polish phytonymic systems further illuminates similarities and differences in naming patterns, confirming that the intertwining of names for oxeye daisy and common daisy is characteristic of naming processes in both languages. The analysis demonstrates that folk phytonymy reflects not only botanical reality but primarily the cultural and symbolic perception of plants in everyday life.
