Title:Comparison of trogloxene and troglophile species to cold-hardiness during winter and summer diapause
Abstract:Cold–hardiness is the ability of organisms to survive shorter or longer exposure to lower temperatures than those causing their body fluids to freeze. This resistance to low temperatures can be measured by determining the LT50, which is the measure of temperature at 50% mortality of individuals exposed to below 0°C temperatures. In our investigation, our goal was to determine the LT50 values of selected, most widely spread Central European trogloxene and troglophile species during their winter and summer diapauses, separately by the sex. The experiment was carried out within a precise thermostatic cooling chamber THK/V1–2020 (Elestro, Slovenia) with adjustable temperature. We started the measurement at –2.0°C, and stopped it at –12.0°C, when all organisms died. The specimens were exposed to a particular temperature for a period of 24 hrs and afterwards they were hold for 48 hrs in a refrigerator at 2.0°C. The survived specimens were exposed to a 1.0°C lower temperature, and the procedure was consequently repeated until the LT50 was reached. As expected, we found out that troglophiles, which are better adapted to carry out a diapause in hypogean habitats, showed higher LT50 values and vice versa. Trogloxenes are better adapted to unstable epigean environment and to occasionally lower temperatures, and are consequently more cold hardy. The LT50 values of particular species differ between different developmental stages, while the difference between winter and summer diapauses is negligible. Resistance to cold is not sex–dependant.
