Title:The Development of the Film Review Text Genre: A Comparison of Traditional and Online Film Reviews
Abstract:The reception of films today is to a large extent influenced by film reviews. They not only serve to inform and guide the film choice, but also shape the public perception and evaluation of films. With the development of new media and the increasing archiving of journalistic content on the internet, the genre of film reviews has also undergone significant changes. Alongside traditional (printed) film reviews, numerous forms of professional and fan-based online film reviews have emerged, exhibiting new textual, stylistic, and communicative features. This master's thesis examines the development of the genre of film reviews and investigates similarities and differences between traditional and online film reviews. The focus is on text-linguistic and stylistic changes as well as the influence of film genre, time of publication, medium, and the critic’s level of professionalism. The aim of the study is to analyse the film review as a text type and to present its development from a text-linguistic and stylistic perspective. The research is based on various theoretical approaches from text linguistics and stylistics, as well as methods of text and stylistic analysis. In the empirical part of the study, fifteen German-language film reviews were analysed, including traditional professional film reviews, professional online film reviews, and fan-based online film reviews. The selected reviews cover arthouse, blockbuster, and niche films from the late 1990s and from 2023. The analyses were conducted on the macro, meso, and micro levels. The study focused in particular on the communicative situation, text functions, criteria of textuality, thematic development, structure and components of film reviews, as well as prototypical stylistic features of the genre and the individual style of the critic. Subsequently, a holistic comparison of the analysed film reviews was carried out. The results show that both traditional and online film reviews exhibit the fundamental prototypical features of the genre; however, they differ particularly in terms of hypertextuality, dialogicity, and form, which also influence style. Differences were also identified between professional and fan-based online film reviews, which clearly diverge in style and in the prototypical structure of the genre. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that medium, individual style, and the critic's level of professionalism play a decisive role in shaping the film review, whereas the film genre itself has a comparatively weaker influence.
