Abstract:Diplomsko delo raziskuje vpliv zgodnjih življenjskih izkušenj na razvoj serijskih morilcev.

Title:The impact of early life experiences on the development of serial killers
Abstract:This bachelor’s thesis examines the influence of early life experiences on the development of serial killers. It explores how childhood, family environment, and traumatic experiences shape personality development and contribute to later violent behavior. The thesis is based on a review of academic and professional literature in the fields of criminology, psychology, psychiatry, and victimology, and analyzes the key factors that frequently appear in the life histories of serial killers. Special attention is given to early childhood trauma, including neglect, physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, the absence of secure attachment, and growing up in dysfunctional family environments. The findings suggest that these experiences can significantly affect the development of empathy, self-esteem, and the ability to form healthy interpersonal relationships. In some individuals, prolonged exposure to adversity may result in feelings of alienation, anger, and a need for control, which can manifest through violent fantasies and other forms of deviant behavior. The thesis also examines the MacDonald triad, bedwetting, fire-setting, and cruelty to animals and discusses its relevance as a potential indicator of early developmental risk factors. The theoretical framework is supported by an analysis of selected serial killer case studies, highlighting the connection between adverse childhood experiences and subsequent violent behavior. The findings indicate that the development of a serial killer cannot be attributed to a single cause but rather to a complex interaction of biological predispositions, psychological characteristics, and environmental influences. The thesis concludes by emphasizing the importance of recognizing signs of childhood distress at an early stage and highlights the role of families, educational institutions, social services, and healthcare professionals in preventing the development of severe violent behavior. Early intervention, appropriate support, and effective prevention strategies are essential for reducing risk and breaking the intergenerational cycle of trauma and violence
