Abstract:V magistrskem delu smo raziskali, kako se različni načini uporabe humorja povezujejo z vidiki duševnega zdravja in kako se duševno zdravje komikov razlikuje od duševnega zdravja splošne populacije.

Title:Mental He(hehe)alth: Associations Between Humor Use and Mental Health, and the Mental Health of Comedians
Abstract:In this master's thesis, we investigated how different ways of using humor are related to different aspects of mental health and how the mental health of comedians differs from that of the general population. The sample consisted of 40 professional comedians and 292 participants with no professional background in comedy. To measure indicators of mental health, we used the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scales (DASS-21) and the Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS). Humor styles were assessed using the Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ), which measures an individual's tendency to use affiliative, self-enhancing, aggressive, and self-defeating humor. Self-defeating humor emerged as the strongest negative predictor of mental health across all regression models, positively predicting depression, anxiety, and stress, and negatively predicting life satisfaction. On the other hand, self-enhancing humor proved to be an important protective factor, as it negatively predicted depression and stress, while positively predicting life satisfaction. Affiliative humor negatively predicted depression and anxiety, while no associations were found between aggressive humor and mental health indicators. Our study found no differences in depression, anxiety, stress, and life satisfaction between the sample of comedians and the general sample, thereby somewhat undermining the so-called "sad clown paradox". We believe that our research makes an important contribution to understanding the role of humor in the context of mental health and can serve as a useful basis for developing new preventive and promotional practices in this area. Furthermore, our findings could make a significant contribution to dismantling stereotypes about comedians, thereby encouraging the creation of guidelines for more responsible media reporting on their mental health.
