Title:Experience and coping with stress among international students at the University of Maribor
Abstract:The purpose of this master's thesis is to examine how stress is experienced and managed among foreign students at the University of Maribor during their studies. The research was conducted among foreign students enrolled at the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Arts, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering, the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture at the University of Maribor. Particular attention is given to factors contributing to the occurrence of stress among foreign students and strategies employed for its management. The theoretical framework presents the position of foreign students within the Slovenian higher education system and defines the concept of stress and its characteristics in the educational environment. Special emphasis is placed on stressors such as acculturation, language barriers, discrimination, loneliness and academic challenges, as well as on the significance of social support and stress management strategies. The empirical analysis is based on quantitative research conducted through an online survey on a sample of 119 foreign students. The results indicate that stress among foreign students is frequently experienced and strongly associated with language barriers, adaptation to a new environment and academic demands. The findings also point to the important role of social support and various personal stress management strategies, such as time management, physical activity and leisure activities. This study contributes to better understanding of the experiences of foreign students in Slovenian higher education and highlights the importance of pedagogical and social support for their successful academic integration.
