Abstract:Dandanes so spletna socialna omrežja popolnoma vpeta v naš vsakdan, zaradi česar na njih preživimo veliko časa.

Title:The Effect of the Attractiveness of the Person in a Post and Comments on Social Networking Sites on Women's Body Image, Desire for Cosmetic Procedures, and Negative Affect
Abstract:Nowadays, social networking sites are fully integrated into our daily lives, leading us to spend a significant amount of time on them. Previous research reveals that the effects of social media are diverse and depend on various factors, including the characteristics of posts. In the present study, we focused on the valence of comments and the attractiveness of the person in the post, which can significantly shape users' body image, desire for cosmetic procedures, and user negative affect, especially among young women. We were also interested in the role that appearance social comparison plays in these outcomes. Accordingly, we conducted a 2 (comment valence: negative or positive) x 2 (person attractiveness: average or high) online experiment involving 150 female students from Slovenian universities. After viewing the experimental manipulation, participants completed questionnaires measuring body image, desire for cosmetic procedures, appearance social comparison, and negative affect. The results of a two-way ANOVA showed that comment valence had no statistically significant effect on body image, desire for cosmetic procedures, or negative affect. Similarly, the attractiveness of the person in the post did not have a statistically significant effect on body image or negative affect. However, it statistically significantly increased the desire for cosmetic procedures. Specifically, participants exposed to a highly attractive person reported a greater desire for cosmetic procedures than those exposed to an average-looking person. The interaction between comment valence and person attractiveness was statistically significant only for the desire for cosmetic procedures. Participants exposed to a highly attractive person with negative comments expressed a greater desire for cosmetic procedures, whereas interaction effects were not statistically significant for body image and negative affect. Moderation analyses revealed that upward appearance comparison was a significant predictor of lower body image, higher desire for cosmetic procedures, and heightened negative affect. However, it did not moderate the effects of comment valence or person attractiveness. In the discussion, we contextualized the findings within the existing literature and developed arguments to further explain the underlying reasons for these results.
