Abstract:Spanje in prehranjevanje sta povezana vidika vsakdanjega delovanja, a je razumevanje njune povezave v realnem življenju še vedno omejeno.

Title:The relationship between sleep and food craving in everyday life: a multilevel analysis
Abstract:Sleeping and eating are linked aspects of everyday functioning, yet the understanding of their relationship in real-life settings is still limited. This master's thesis examined the relationship between sleep duration, subjective sleep quality, and food cravings in everyday life, with a particular focus on whether difficulties in emotion regulation moderate these associations. Based on an Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA) design, 228 participants aged 18–35 reported daily cravings which were analysed in groups (high-calorie, carbohydrate-rich, protein-rich, and fruit and vegetable foods) via the SEMA³ smartphone application over seven days. A morning questionnaire assessed sleep duration and subjective sleep quality. Data were analysed using linear mixed-effects models, and emotion regulation difficulties were measured with the DERS-16. Analyses showed that neither sleep duration nor subjective sleep quality predicted cravings for any food category, and emotion regulation difficulties did not moderate these relationships. The only significant finding emerged at the between-person level: individuals with better average subjective sleep quality reported stronger cravings for fruits and vegetables. The time of the day was the only consistent predictor of food cravings. The predominantly null findings indicate that minor day-to-day variations in sleep among healthy young adults are not a significant risk factor for food cravings.
Keywords:sleep, food craving, ecological momentary Aasessment (EMA), emotion eegulation
