Abstract:Podnebne spremembe predstavljajo enega največjih okoljskih izzivov sodobne družbe, ogljični odtis pa predstavlja enega ključnih kazalnikov vpliva človekovih dejavnosti na okolje. V raziskavi so bili analizirani veljavni učni načrti osnovnošolskega in srednješolskega izobraževanja, pregledana domača in tuja literatura ter slovenski pedagoški prispevki s področja trajnostnega razvoja in podnebnih sprememb.

Title:Interdisciplinary approach to the concept of »carbon footprint« in primary and secondary schools using a practical company calculation example
Abstract:Climate change represents one of the greatest environmental challenges facing modern society, while the carbon footprint is one of the key indicators of the environmental impact on human activities. Given the growing importance of sustainable development, it is essential that the concept of the carbon footprint be systematically integrated into primary and secondary education. The aim of this master´s thesis was to explore the possibilities of an interdisciplinary approach to the concept of the carbon footprint in primary and secondary schools and to examine its integration with the curricula of chemistry, biology and other natural science subjects. The research included an analysis of the current national curricula for primary and secondary education, as well as review of Slovenian and international literature and educational publications related to sustainable development and climate change. A significant part of the thesis presents the calculation of a corporate carbon footprint using the case study of Elrad Electronics d.o.o. The study describes the methodology for calculating the corporate carbon footprint in accordance with GHG protocol and explains the approach to analysing and interpreting the results. This study served as the basis for the development of educational materials and demonstrated how legislation and best practices from the business sector can be transferred into educational environment. The analysis of school curricula revealed that the topic of the carbon footprint is addressed only indirectly and is dispersed across different subjects rather than being systematically presented as a comprehensive interdisciplinary concept. The findings indicate significant opportunities to integrate biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics and geography through the concept of the carbon footprint, thereby contributing to a deeper understanding of climate change and sustainable development. Based on these findings, two interdisciplinary teaching units, one for primary education and one for secondary education, were developed to facilitate the incorporation of the carbon footprint concept and its calculation using a real-world business case into the educational process. The thesis provides a practical example of interdisciplinary approach to a contemporary environmental issue while simultaneously familiarising students with authentic business practices. Such an approach represents a relevant and contemporary method for foresting the sustainability competencies required by future generations.
