Abstract:Hitrost sedimentacija eritrocitov (ESR) predstavlja eno izmed osnovnih laboratorijskih preiskav za oceno prisotnosti in intenzitete vnetnih procesov ter drugih patoloških stanj v organizmu. Ugotovljene razlike med kapilarnimi in venskimi vzorci so bile ovrednotene z vidika klinične pomembnosti in uporabnosti metode v rutinski laboratorijski diagnostiki.

Title:The impact of blood collection method (capillary or yenous) on erythrocyte sedimentation using the mini-cube analyzer
Abstract:Erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) represents one of the basic laboratory tests for assessing the presence and intensity of inflammatory processes and other pathological conditions in the body. The test result can be influenced by numerous pre-analytical, analytical, and biological factors, among which the type of blood collection is of significant importance. The purpose of this master's thesis was to investigate the influence of the blood collection type – capillary versus venous – on erythrocyte sedimentation rate values using the Mini-Cube analyzer. The study included subjects who underwent both methods of blood collection. Erythrocyte sedimentation rate measurements were performed under standardized laboratory conditions using the Mini-Cube analyzer, which enables automated determination of sedimentation from a smaller sample volume. The collected results were statistically analyzed to determine potential differences between capillary and venous samples and to assess the degree of agreement between the two methods. The results of the study showed that the type of blood collection can influence the measured values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate. The identified differences between capillary and venous samples were evaluated in terms of clinical significance and the utility of the method in routine laboratory diagnostics. The analysis enabled an assessment of the reliability of capillary collection as a potential alternative to venous collection, particularly in cases where venous blood collection is difficult or less suitable. We found that capillary blood collection on the Mini-Cube analyzer cannot represent a general alternative to venous collection due to the rheological limitations of microcirculation and the risk of hemodilution with tissue fluid. The method is only suitable for screening tests in a healthy population with expected normal values, whereas for the diagnosis and monitoring of inflammatory conditions, venous collection remains the only methodologically safe choice.
