Title:Redevelopment of city roads with an emphasis on non-motorized traffic participants - the example of Osojnikova street in Maribor
Abstract:This master's thesis addresses the redesign of urban roads with a focus on improving conditions for non-motorized road users, particularly pedestrians and cyclists. The theoretical part presents the requirements for urban road design, the types and dimensions of pedestrian and cycling facilities, as well as traffic-calming measures. Special attention is given to ensuring road safety, accessibility, connectivity, and comfort for vulnerable road users. The practical part analyzes the existing conditions of Osojnikova Street in Maribor. The analysis included road infrastructure, road safety, and the identification of conflict points. The findings revealed that the pavement is deteriorated along several sections, traffic signage is inadequate, cycling facilities are absent, and additional issues arise from poor visibility at driveway exits, inappropriate parking, and insufficient pedestrian safety. The traffic analysis showed a predominance of motorized traffic, while the road accident analysis highlighted problems related to failure to yield, vehicle maneuvers, and risks to pedestrians. Based on the findings, three redesign alternatives for Osojnikova Street were developed. The first alternative shows comprehensive reconstruction with separated cycling paths, the second focuses on the renewal of the existing infrastructure with on-road cycling lanes and a speed limit of 30 km/h, while the third combines comprehensive reconstruction with the removal of parking spaces on the most problematic section. A comparative analysis of the alternatives showed that the third option provides the greatest improvements in road safety, visibility, and the quality of infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists. The proposed solution contributes to a safer and more sustainable traffic environment and encourages the use of non-motorized modes of transport in urban areas.
