Title:Shared reading of fairy tales and the use of mobile devices in the family environment of a preschool child
Abstract:Contemporary researches point to the increasingly frequent use of mobile devices among preschool children and its impact on developmentally stimulating activities, particularly the shared reading of fairy tales. The theoretical part of the master’s thesis presents the importance of the preschool period for a child’s holistic development, highlighting the role of fairy tales and their contribution to cognitive, speech and language, social-emotional, and moral development. Particular attention is also devoted to the relationship between the use of mobile devices and the shared reading of fairy tales. In the empirical part, a study was conducted among 633 parents of preschool children using an online questionnaire. The results indicate that longer periods of mobile device use are associated with a lower frequency of shared reading, whereas greater access to books at home and more active parental involvement are associated with more frequent reading-related activities. Parents who have more positive attitudes towards reading and regulate device use more consistently, read to their children more frequently. The frequency of shared reading and mobile device use does not differ according to the child’s gender or age; however, significant differences were found according to parental educational attainment. Parents with higher levels of education read to their children more frequently and impose greater restrictions on mobile device use. Based on these findings, recommendations are provided for parents, preschool teachers, and other professionals regarding raising awareness of the importance of shared reading at a time when mobile devices are becoming increasingly present in children’s lives.
