Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava srbsko politično ofenzivo na Hrvaškem med leti 1988 in 1990 ter oblikovanje srbskega avtonomnega območja znotraj meja Republike Hrvaške.

Title:SERBIAN POLITICAL OFFENSIVE IN CROATIA DURING THE DISINTEGRATION OF SFRJ
Abstract:In this diploma thesis we discuss the Serbian political offensive in Croatia from 1988 to 1990 and the formation of an autonomous Serbian area within the borders of the Republic of Croatia. The unstable situation in which the SFRY found itself in the 1980s aid to the rebirth of the idea of Great Serbia, a country that would unite all Serbs on the Balkan Peninsula, including those who lived in Croatia, under one power. Belgrade political leaders with the help of nationalistic propaganda wanted to calm down the relations between Croats and Serbs in Croatia, most represented in Northern Dalmatia, mainly in the region of Kninska Krajina (Knin forntier). The Croatian Democratic Union HDZ won the first post-war multiparty republic elections in Croatia, as a consequence of which the relations between the nations additionally strained. With the establishment of the multiparty political system the Croatian Serbs have also found their own party in Knin, under the leadership of Jovan Rašković. The Serbian Democratic Party SDS reached no visible success in elections. But in the summer of 1990 the Serbs called a referendum under its patronage, deciding on Serbian autonomy in Croatia. Before the voting a revolt against the Croatian power broke out in Knin and separated Kninska Krajina from the rest of the republic. The revolt spread to all areas populated by Serbs which also gradually claimed political autonomy and finally their own country. Meanwhile, disagreements arose in the SDS because Rašković disapproved of the armed conflict between the nations. The Yugoslav People's Army JLA, which was beginning to favour one of the sides to the dispute, had an important role in the revolt. With the establishment of the Serbian Autonomous Oblast of Krajina (SAO Krajina) in December 1990, one last step towards an absolute political and territorial autonomy of Serbia in Croatia has been made.
