Title:THE QUALITY OF SUMMARIZATION AND CITATION IN MASTER'S THESES IN THE FIELD OF SOCILA SCIENCES
Abstract:This diploma project sets forward the fact that each author of a work should be entitled to recognition of his authorship. At the same time, the work focuses on the quality of summarization and citation in Master's theses in the field of social sciences, and highlights the problem of plagiarism. In the theoretical part of the thesis, we presented and focused on the quality of scientific and professional writing as well as defined the concept of plagiarism and its forms. We also introduced a number of plagiarism detection programs. In the empirical part, we used content analysis to evaluate the quality of summarization and citation in Master's theses in the field of social sciences between 2008 and 2012. In each thesis we analyzed randomly selected paragraphs. Results show that (1) almost half of the paragraphs analyzed contain irregular summarization and citation in at least one of its forms, and that almost every other paragraph analyzed was problematic. On the other hand, our analysis also revealed that (2) “incorrect literal summarization” can be found on both Slovenian universities as the most common type of non-conforming entries, however we didn’t count them as serious violations. When comparingthe two universities, (3) no significant differences were observed or a very small one, and (4) there were no significant changes from 2008 to 2012 in terms of increasing or decreasing the rate of summarization and citation violations.
