Title:TRANSPORT ACCESSIBILITY OF NORTH ADRIATIC PORTS: Trieste, Venice, Koper and Rijeka
Abstract:The global economic crisis has heightened competition between economic operators. Optimization of transport costs has prompted the search of shorter and cheaper ways from producer to consumer. Due to the geographical location north Adriatic ports are the deepest gates to European continent. Due to the increase of trade between Europe and Asia they have also become particularly interesting for the Asian market. The addressed ports represent the shortest route between Europe and the Near, Middle and Far East. North Adriatic ports and their hinterland, which covers Northern Italy, Austria, southern Germany, Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, south Poland and Ukraine are linked both by road and rail network, which is outdated, overloaded and inadequate. In some places the construction of missing links that are needed for ports development are not realized yet. As part of the construction of a European core network some changes and improvements are planned for a period of about twenty years, which includes addressed ports. In the work plans the emphasis is on the upgrading and modernization of the rail network, thereby relieving the road traffic, where the congestion and environmental pollution are considered significant problems. North Adriatic needs primarily to improve rail capacity, which does not comply with the requirements of the rapidly growing throughput of north Adriatic ports, and eliminate the problem of bottlenecks and congestion.
Keywords:traffic access, core network, corridors, containerized cargo growth
