Abstract:V svojem romanu Klavnica pet, ki ga je napisal leta 1968, želi Kurt Vonnegut predstaviti strah in trepet vojne.

Title:Comparative analysis of humorous effects in the slovanian and hungrian translation of Kurt Vonnegut`s Slaughterhouse-five
Abstract:The novel Slaughterhouse-five, written by Kurt Vonnegut in 1968, describes war and all its dark horrors. The novel contains numerous humorous passages and elements of science fiction which are used to soften the overall impression of the darkest aspects of war. The humor is cynical, satirical, ironical and in most cases not easy to recognize, as it is often “hidden between the lines”. Identifying these humorous parts is therefore not an easy task and translating them is even harder. Defining humour is not a simple task either. In this master’s thesis we first defined the term “humour” and discussed challenges translators usually encounter when translating humor. Afterwards we identified humorous passages in the novel, compared them to the Slovene (translated by Branko Gradišnik in 1980) and Hungarian translations (translated by Nemes László in 1969) and analysed them according to D. Long’s and A. Graesser’s categorization of spontaneous humour. The translators also need to transfer literal meaning accurately, therewfore we analysed translation strategies as suggested by Vinay and Darbelnet in Comparative Stylistics of French and English: A Methodology for Translation. The results showed that both translators successfully rendered most of the humorous passages and succeeded in transferring the same humorous effects. As we assumed and intended to verify strategies of adaptations and equivalence prevailed.
