Title:The connection between formal qualifications and acquired competences and job skills
Abstract:The purpose of this master's thesis is to establish the connection between formal qualifications and acquired competences and job skills. In order to determine the connection, the theoretical part of the thesis sets out to present the importance of education and its effects in modern society as well as the Slovenian school system and its compliance with the concept of a knowledge society. The thesis highlights two influential theories of education – the human capital theory and the signalling theory, which are then used for the purposes of explaining the connection between formal qualifications and the competences and skills. We interviewed 205 employed individuals from the Dolenjska region who completed education levels 5-8. The descriptive and causal non-experimental empirical research methods were used for the purposes of data processing. The analytical results showed a variety of opinions held by the respondents regarding the practical application of knowledge acquired through formal education in a work setting and the creation of human capital. However, their views on the definition of the primary function of education were fairly uniform, as the majority of respondents identified the very function that is highlighted by the theory of human capital as the most important function of education. In view of the social environment in Slovenia and based on our analytical results, we have attributed a greater predictive value to the theory of human capital. Further analysis also revealed some statistically significant differences regarding gender, level of education and profession.
