Abstract:Nacionalni inštitut za javno zdravje nam daje vpogled v vedno večje zaznavanje težav otrok in mladostnikov na področju duševnega zdravja.

Title:The role and competence of a counsellor in identifying mood swings in children and adolescents
Abstract:The National Institute of Public Health provides us with the insight into the increasing detection of mental health issues among children and adolescents. In the master's thesis titled "The role and competence of a counsellor in identifying mood swings in children and adolescents," we aimed to investigate and determine the role and competence of a school counsellor in identifying mood swings in children and adolescents at school. We explored how competent counsellors feel when identifying these disorders, where they perceive gaps in their knowledge and competencies, and what their role is in implementing promotional and preventive activities. The study involved 97 counsellors from primary and secondary schools. Data were collected through anonymous online survey questionnaires. The results of the research showed that counsellors are aware of the importance of their role in identifying mood swings in children and adolescents. It was also found that they feel sufficiently competent to recognize such issues and are appropriately literate in the field of identifying mood swings. Counsellors additionally engage in self-initiated education and are familiar with the methods and steps of intervention. When detecting problems in a child or adolescent, counsellors collaborate with other professional workers who are in contact with this youth, know them and at the same time connect with other external experts as well. Statistically significant differences appeared among older counsellors in the literacy area of recognizing mood swings.
