Title:A coaching model as a leadership support for head nurses
Abstract:Introduction: In addition to extensive professional work, head nurses also take care of organization and leadership of the team. However, they often do not receive sufficient education in this area. Coaching, defined as a partnership relationship that encourages an individual to achieve their full potential, can significantly contribute to more effective work of the head nurse. Methods: In the theoretical part, the methods of description, compilation, comparison, analysis and synthesis were used. In the empirical part, a qualitative research paradigm was employed. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews and analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The study included ten head nurses employed in Slovenian public health institutions. Results: The research confirmed that a lack of knowledge in management causes various challenges for head nurses in their work. They expressed a desire to acquire additional knowledge and showed great interest in incorporating a coaching model into their work. Discussion: Head nurses who use the coaching method in their work are less burdened and lead their teams more effectively. The positive effects are evident both at the workplace and in their private lives. Coaching also significantly impacts the satisfaction of employees and patients. A draft of a coaching program is presented, focusing on acquiring skills that would empower head nurses in the areas of leadership, communication with colleagues and patients. Conclusion: Incorporating coaching into the training and work of head nurses and other staff is key to maintaining healthcare at a high level.
