Title:Metaphysical Grammar of Agape in the Context of the Rawls' Social Theory
Abstract:The concept of a just society has inspired numerous thinkers throughout history, from ancient philosophers to contemporary theorists, all of whom have sought to define what justice means in practice. It is often understood as the provision of equal opportunities, the protection of fundamental freedoms, and the fair distribution of goods. However, the question remains whether justice can be based solely on impartial principles or if it requires a deeper ethical foundation that goes beyond mere formal justice. This dissertation explores the just society through the lens of two seemingly different perspectives that, I will argue, can complement each other: Rawls' liberal theory of justice and the Christian ideal of agape love. While Rawls views justice as a fundamental principle governing society, Christian ethics emphasizes unconditional love for others, which transcends justice and brings to the forefront care for one's neighbour. The key question addressed in this dissertation is whether agape love can contribute to the liberal conception of justice and whether these two perspectives can be integrated into a unified vision of a just society. Agape love, due to its divine nature, is specific to the Christian tradition, but because of its focus on selfless care and respect for others, it can transcend religious boundaries and become a universal ethical ideal. The connection between agape love and liberal theory of justice opens the possibility of adding a dimension of compassion that goes beyond the mere fair distribution of rights and goods. Rawls' theory is based on impartiality and fair opportunities, but it faces criticism, particularly from communitarians and libertarians. These critiques also address Rawls' rejection of the role of religious values in the political space. While Rawls advocates for neutrality and inclusivity, some argue that this approach fails to account for the voices of all social groups, particularly minorities. This dissertation examines how Rawls' understanding of justice can be combined with agape love to achieve a more inclusive social order. Critiques of Rawls' theory, which point out its abstract nature and shortcomings in addressing specific social inequalities, lead us to the idea that incorporating ethical principles, such as agape love, allows for a broader and more humane approach to justice that goes beyond institutional considerations.
