Title:Teaching of tangible and intangible cultural heritage in social studies class
Abstract:Teaching cultural heritage from early childhood has numerous benefits for both individuals and the wider society. It supports the development of identity, critical thinking, national and linguistic awareness, a sense of belonging, and appreciation for one's own culture and heritage. As part of a master's thesis, an empirical study was conducted among Slovenian primary school teachers of fourth and fifth grades. The research aimed to explore the current state of teaching tangible and intangible cultural heritage in social studies lessons, how teachers understand the concept of cultural heritage, and their views on its impact on students. Data was collected through a questionnaire completed by 175 teachers. The findings showed that while teachers understand cultural heritage, their definitions are often incomplete. They use different teaching methods for tangible and intangible heritage but apply similar teaching strategies, with experiential learning being the most common. Intangible heritage is addressed more frequently than tangible. Teachers place high importance on curriculum goals. Most of them have not used digital heritage presentations in their teaching yet. They believe that students gain most knowledge about cultural heritage in school, particularly in social studies classes, and that they feel competent to teach this subject.
