Abstract:Kognitivne sposobnosti imajo v obdobju pozne odraslosti ključno vlogo pri ohranjanju vsakodnevne kompetentnosti in samostojnega življenja.

Title:Metacognitive Accuracy of Self-Assessment Across Different Domains of Cognitive Functioning in Relation to Depressive Symptoms in Late Adulthood
Abstract:Cognitive abilities play a key role in maintaining daily competence and independent living in late adulthood. In addition to objective assessment of cognitive functioning, it is also important to consider how individuals assess their own abilities, as depressive symptoms, for example, can lead to overly negative self-assessment. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between objective and subjective measures in five areas of cognitive functioning, the role of depressive symptoms in self-assessment and bias, as well as the role of demographic factors in the accuracy of metacognitive self-assessments. In a sample of 103 older adults, we found that metacognitive self-assessments were positively but weakly correlated with domain-specific objective results. Age was found to be a negative predictor of performance on the Verbal Fluency Test, Rey Verbal Learning Test and Trail Making Test, while education was a positive predictor of performance on the Verbal Fluency Test and Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure Test. Depressiveness was a negative predictor of self-assessments in all areas and was associated with underestimation in the areas of visual perception, attention, and concentration. The educational groups differed in the accuracy of metacognitive self-assessments only in the area of visual perception, while the age groups showed no differences. The findings contribute to a better understanding of metacognitive processes in late adulthood and open up opportunities for further research in this area.
