Abstract:V športnem, zlasti odbojkarskem diskurzu, se prepletata strokovna terminologija in frazeologija. Mlajši učenci so frazeme pogosto razlagali dobesedno, medtem ko so starejši pogosteje prepoznali njihov preneseni pomen. Razumevanje se med posameznimi izrazi razlikuje. Nekateri termini (npr. blok) so zelo dobro razumljeni, medtem ko drugi (npr. povaljka in smeč) povzročajo več težav. Razlike glede na spol učencev niso bile izrazite. Ugotovitve raziskave kažejo, da razumevanje frazemov zahteva razvitejše jezikovne zmožnosti, medtem ko je razumevanje terminov bolj povezano s poznavanjem športne dejavnosti, pa tudi s pogostostjo rabe in pomensko prosojnostjo posameznega izraza.

Title:Understanding of Volleyball Terms and Idioms Among 5th and 9th Grade Primary School Students
Abstract:In sports discourse, particularly in volleyball, terminology and phraseology are closely intertwined. While terms denote the technical and tactical elements of the game (e.g., block, spike), phraseological units represent fixed multi-word expressions with figurative meanings (e.g., to go for broke or to go all in), which are frequently used in sports communication. Understanding both types of expressions is essential for effective communication in a sports context. The aim of the study was to examine how fifth- and ninth-grade primary school students understand volleyball-related terms and phraseological units, and whether comprehension differs with respect to age and gender. The research was based on an analysis of students’ responses, in which they explained the meanings of selected expressions. The results showed that older students were generally more successful in understanding both terms and idioms. Younger students often interpreted phrases literally, whereas older students more frequently recognized their figurative meanings. Comprehension varied across individual expressions. Some terms (e.g., block) were very well understood, while others (e.g., rolling dive and spike) caused more difficulties. Gender-based differences were not significant. The findings indicate that understanding idioms requires more developed linguistic competence, whereas understanding terms is more closely related to familiarity with the sport, as well as to the frequency of use and semantic transparency of individual expressions.
