Abstract:Diplomsko delo obravnava start-up ekosistem v avtomobilski industriji s poudarkom na študiji primera kitajskega proizvajalca električnih vozil NIO.

Title:Start-Up ecosystem in the automotive industry: A case study of Nio
Abstract:The thesis examines the start-up ecosystem in the automotive industry, with a focus on the case study of the Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer NIO. It emphasizes the analysis of a business model that combines direct vehicle sales, the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) subscription service, and digital and community platforms, while exploring their impact on perceived value, customer trust, and the company’s market position. A comparative analysis with other automotive start-ups reveals that NIO stands out for its level of integration between digital and physical components, the creation of network effects through battery swapping infrastructure, and the active engagement of users in community activities. Special attention is given to the influence of technological innovations, strategic partnerships, and institutional support on the development of the business model, as well as the challenges the company faces in its international expansion. In the analysis of the Chinese and European markets, the thesis highlights the importance of local adaptation of business strategies, differences in infrastructural and regulatory conditions, and the opportunities offered by new generations of batteries and digital services. The comparative analysis underlines the key advantages of NIO’s model, while also pointing out the limitations of its transferability to environments without appropriate infrastructure or regulatory support. The contribution of this research lies in shedding light on how start-ups in the automotive industry can gain a competitive advantage in the global market through innovative business models and digital solutions.
