Title:The Use of ICT and Self-Reported Executive Functions Among 5th- and 6th-Grade Primary School Students
Abstract:This master's thesis aimed to examine the use of information and communication technology (ICT) and self-reported executive functions among fifth- and sixth-grade students. We examined the availability, purpose, and duration of ICT use at home and at school, differences in executive functions by gender and grade, and associations between ICT use and executive functions. The cross-sectional study included 154 students from two primary schools in the Podravska region who completed an anonymous questionnaire. Students most frequently used smartphones for leisure and the internet for schoolwork. Sixth-grade students reported longer daily ICT use at home than fifth-grade students, while no significant difference was found in ICT use at school. No differences in executive functions were found between genders. Fifth-grade students reported higher inhibition than sixth-grade students, while no differences were found in working memory or cognitive flexibility. Longer daily ICT use at home was weakly negatively associated with inhibition and working memory, but not with cognitive flexibility. ICT use at school was not significantly associated with any executive function. The findings highlight the importance of considering the context and circumstances of ICT use in addition to its duration and, due to the cross-sectional design, do not allow causal conclusions.
